Seven witches. Seven bells. One hour to decide whether they stay buried or walk again. Coven is the newest room at our Peckham venue and it is the most ambitious build we have attempted so far. If you have been waiting for a genuinely new scary escape room in London rather than another rebranded version of something you have already played, this is it.
Here is what waits behind the church door.
The story behind Coven
Centuries ago, seven witches ruled Hollow Mere Hill. They called themselves The Sisters of the Veil and they promised the village healing. What they actually did was feed on the village children, using blood and prayer to hold on to their youth. When Father Corvin worked out what was happening, he built a church directly over their grove and burned them alive inside it.
Their leader, Aurelia DeVyne, died with a curse on her lips: seven we were, and seven shall rise again. The church bells were forged from their teeth. If all seven ever toll together, the coven comes back.
Your team walks into the ruins of St Aurelia’s Church on the anniversary of the burning. The door seals. The first bell tolls. You have until the seventh to complete Father Corvin’s ritual, or to help the sisters rise and take your place among them.
Why the branching ending changes everything
Most escape rooms have one outcome. You get out or you do not. Coven has two very different endings and your team decides which one you get. Seal the coven and you leave St Aurelia’s as the people who ended a centuries-old curse. Choose the other path and the ending gets considerably darker.
That single design choice does something interesting to a group. Halfway through the hour, when the bells are still tolling and the clues start pointing in two directions, teams begin arguing. Not about puzzles – about what they actually want to happen. It is the closest thing to a real horror film decision we have ever put in a room.
What the room feels like
Coven takes 2 to 8 players and runs for 60 minutes with a live actor throughout. Age 16 and over, with 13 to 15 year olds allowed if an adult stays on site.
The set is built around sound. Bells, chanting, whispering under the floorboards. There is very little light and what light there is comes from candles, so your eyes never quite settle. Our actor works the space rather than jumping out of a single hiding spot, which means the pressure never really lifts.
Puzzle-wise it sits in the middle of our range. Harder than [Twisted Tales](https://www.horrorescape.co.uk/scenarios/twisted-tales), a little kinder than [Ravenswood Asylum](https://www.horrorescape.co.uk/scenarios/ravenswood-asylum). Teams of four or five tend to have the smoothest run.
How scary is it, honestly?
Honestly? It is a slow burn rather than a jump-scare machine. Coven builds dread. There are moments that will make you flinch, but the fear here comes from atmosphere and from the sense that something in the room wants you to fail in a very specific way.
If you want it turned up, we offer an increased fear level for an extra charge – £10 for teams of 2 to 5 and £20 for teams of 6 to 8. That means more contact from the actor and closer, more sustained scares. Roughly half of our groups take it. Nobody has asked for a refund yet.
Who should book Coven
Experienced escape room players will get the most out of the branching ending. Horror fans who prefer folk horror and ritual to gore will feel right at home. It also works well for slightly larger groups, since the room has enough space and enough parallel tasks to keep eight people busy rather than three people solving while five watch.
It is not the room to start with if it is your first ever escape game and you are genuinely nervous. Start with something from our [full list of scenarios](https://www.horrorescape.co.uk/scenarios) and work up.
